Most countries will fight for a place surrounded by water, just like Italy. Italy is surrounded 3/4 by water and 1/4 connected to land making it a peninsula. Italy used to be expanded as a great empire, not just the 'boot'. Trading across water made their empire even more successful, since they conquered place from Africa and all around the Mediterranean, they had resources shipped from every one of their countries back then. The body of water was what allowed them to trade with ships and trade with more than 1 country.Trade throughout the connected countries was possible however the most benefit came from the body of water, the Mediterranean Sea.
